We Found some Builder/Teachers!
The Homostead, a queer and trans homesteading project in the slocan valley which also serves as headquarters for the Center for Radical Education, Access and Tech Empowerment (Camp CREATE: inspacific.wix.com/camp) was looking to work with a skilled individual or team for a learn and build session this summer. We are excited to be working with a few local pros.
Our plan is to build a multi-use building (barn with attached greenhouse and wood storage). We will be using timbers reclaimed from the booms of the old Slocan Mill, and lumber milled at a local small mill, reclaimed windows and other low-impact building materials.
The timeline of the project is:
May 2016 - Excavating into the hillside for the footprint of the barn
May/June 2016 - Timber frame construction educational work weekend
June-August 2016 - Work Weekends with focuses on roofing, walls, stall building and more
Spring 2017- Cob wall construction for greenhouse thermal wall + rocket stove planting bench
We are looking forward to having a fun and educational time learning and working and playing together. If you are interested in being a part of one of the future learning work weekends send an email to create.slocan@gmail.com
We are especially interested in working with folks who are women, femmes, queers and other folks who have a personal experience knowledge surrounding gendered barriers to technical knowledge exchange.
